Harold Bernard Lockwood, son of Lewis and Ann Elizabeth Hill Lockwood, was born September 22, 1927, at Valentine, Nebraska. He moved to Fayette with his family and graduated from Fayette High School in 1945.
Harold served with the U.S. Navy during World War II and with the U.S. Coast Guard during both the Korean and Vietnam wars. After retiring from the Coast Guard in 1970, Harold returned to the Fayette area where he worked as a substitute mail carrier.
On Tuesday, February 21, 2012, his death occurred following a lengthy battle with cancer at the home of his daughter in Sumner, where he had been living for the past eleven weeks. He was eighty-four years old and was a member of St. Francis of Assisi Catholic Church in Fayette and the Fayette American Legion. Among his many interests were fishing, woodworking, collecting, mushroom hunting, and watching Bonanza on television.
Harold is survived by one son, Troy (Anne-Marie) Potter of St. Johns, Michigan; two daughters, Deborah Lockwood of West Des Moines and Kasey (Troy) Buchholz of Sumner; seven grandchildren, Matthew Overton, Meredith Otis, Joshua and Benjamin Potter, and Julia, Lily, and Josie Buchholz; two great grandchildren, Hudson and Kasen Otis; one brother, Robert (Ruth) Lockwood of Littlestown, Pennsylvania; and three sisters, Helen Scheidel of Fayette, Mary Ann Roach of West Union, and Frances Popenhagen of Wadena.
He was preceded in death by his parents.
Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10:30 a.m., Saturday, February 25, 2012, at St. Francis of Assisi Catholic Church in Fayette with Rev. Jim Brokman officiating. Interment will follow at St. Francis Cemetery in Fayette with military rites provided by the Fayette American Legion. Friends may call from 4:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m., Friday, February 24, 2012, at Becker-Milnes Funeral Home in Fayette where there will be a rosary recited at 4:00 pm. Friends may also call for one hour preceding mass at the church on Saturday. Becker-Milnes Funeral Home in Fayette is in charge of arrangements.
